English Springer Spaniel Breed: The Hunter’s Choice

The Spaniel dog breed already appeared as early as the 1600s and paintings served as hard proofs of its existence. Purposely, these dogs were used as hunting companions even until today. The name spaniel was derived from this dog's skill to spring or flush out game birds into the air before guns were introduced.

The advent of firearms such as shotguns made the spaniel to be replaced. But Spaniel still continued its reputation as being a fun hunting assistant even up to this present time. Dog owners always prefer to have this type of dog breed because of its outstanding skill to hunt rabbits and waterfowls.

This dog breed is always compared to Velcro because of its similarity to wanting being in the immediate vicinity of his owner. Wherever the owner goes, this dog also goes. The presence of the owner, somehow, makes the dog feel secured and comfortable.

Other reasons why this dog is often preferred to be a hunting companion is that it is playful, energetic, happy and cheerful compared to other breeds. As simple things as socks, empty bottles, or towels, the dog can already have fun playing alone. Its humor is far extraordinary than other breeds so owners prefer to have this type of dog breed.

Simple regular training for the English Springer spaniel plays a vital role for his overall health condition. Aside from healthy diet, mental exercise for the dog that includes mostly of physical activities such as Frisbee games are ideal. Also, training the dog to find something you have hidden somewhere is a good mental exercise; this dog breed is good in retrieving things that are kept.

Its unlimited stamina requires intense exercise in order to have its mental and physical health optimized. Failing to maintain or boost the overall health condition of this breed type would lead to problems such as contracting diseases. Nothing is more important than to ensure the health of the dog to keep it safe from usually contracted illnesses such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA and hip dysplasia.

Other diseases that are common to this breed type are ear infections. Failing to clean the dog's ears every week causes the growth of yeast and bacteria. Yeast and bacteria lead to ear and later brain infections; trimming the hair around the ears also help in the prevention bacterial and yeast growth.

This breed type is generally obedient, smart and energetic. Its exceptional attentiveness and alertness make good combination traits for being a perfect hunting companion. Stanley Cohen's "The Intelligence of Dogs" has declared the English Springer Spaniel as the 13th most reliable and intelligent dog breed.
