There are various species of the Dwarf hamster. But they are all lovable just the same and are the perfect home pets. Dwarf hamsters are small hamsters, unlike the large Syrian hamster specie. But being small in size does not mean they are easier to care to for.

These miniature hamsters are very jumpy and are known to make a quick-getaway. They can hide in the most unnoticed places as they can fit into almost anything. Keeping them secure is of utmost importance.

The natural habitat of the hamster is a self-made underground shaft but tamed hamsters are usually housed in the plastic version of these shafts--the tubular habitats--that are sold in pet stores. Take note though that you should get the ones made for little mice and not the ones made for hamsters as the latter are too large for Dwarf hamsters. Wire cages and aquariums with a ten to twenty gallon capacity are also good options.

They are also extremely energetic and mobile. It is essential to have a running wheel inside his container. Get the ones tailored to the dwarf hamsters' size. You will find that they absolutely enjoy getting on these wheels and can run for up to five miles.

Because hamsters like to dig just as they normally do in their natural habitats, provide you dwarf hamster with a substrate made of a dust-free and absorbent material. He will naturally make a nest out of the substrates. A good substrate would be one made out of wood shavings. Avoid cedar-based or pine-based products--they cause breathing problems for hamsters. It is important to clear out the substrate entirely on a weekly basis.

Shredded paper, tissue and cotton make for good nesting materials too. Because of their need to be alone once in a while, hamsters have to create these little nests for themselves.

Some hamster eating habits you should know about are that they like to pile their food in their nests yet still want to be given fresh supplies of food and water continually. They have large appetites despite their tiny frames and eat a lot of dried fruits, vegetables, seeds and pellets. This is due to the fact that they burn a lot of energy because they are constantly moving around.

It is important to give your dwarf hamsters soft wooden chew toys. Do not let them keep gnawing on whatever is lying around their cage. This can damage their teeth and jaws. Hamsters will never stop chewing because their teeth never stop growing.

Dwarf hamsters are such great pets and require little maintenance, which is well worth your time. All you have to do is make sure that their homes and accessories are disinfected once a week with soap and water. Avoid chemical solutions as those will cause more harm to your pets than good. Remember that substrate must only be placed on dry cages, so wipe your cages thoroughly after you rinse them. Now wasn't that easy?
