Injured Paw Pads Cause Pet Pain

Pain relief for dogs with injured paw pads is often not given, whether treatment is by the vet or the dog owner. This is a shame because paw pad injuries are definitely painful to dogs.

Think about how much it hurts when your foot is injured in some way. Feet and paws bear a lot of weight that presses down on an injury and causes pain. If you have a blister or cut on the bottom of your foot, it can cause a lot of pain when you walk. Dog also suffer pain when their paw pads are hurt.

If your dog gets an injury to its paw pads, your vet will focus on the injury. Vets clean the injured area and give the dog antibiotics and a tetanus shot, if necessary. Your dog may have to wear a special collar to keep him or her from licking or biting the injured paw pad. The reason dogs do that is because of the pain. Since we don't want them in pain, it's important to insist on pain relief for dogs with injured paws, as well as treatment of the injury.

Paw pad injuries can occur in many situations. In an urban area, broken glass is a problem and even if you try to watch out for it, you may not see tiny glass splinters that can injure your dog's paw pad. Ice on the sidewalk can be sharp enough to cut your dog's paw pads. The salt that melts ices on sidewalks and streets in urban and suburban areas can also damage paw pads. Some pet stores have even started to sell snow boots for dogs. However, one doesn't see a lot of dogs walking around in boots. That may be because of the expense of the boots or the hassle of putting boots on dogs.

Of course dogs will injury their paw pads in rural areas too. In addition to injury caused by glass and snow, running on hard rocky terrain may also cause injury to the dog's paw pads. Especially owners of the hunting dogs to be very cautious about injury to dogs paw pads, because this injury make to dog unsuitable for hunting purpose. To prevent paw pad injury its good to train the dog first with short run in rocky area which will toughen up the paw pads of the dog.

For hunting and working dogs paw pads are very important. This paw pads give good grip when these dogs run in the fields. There is some doubt in the mind of dog owner whether the long nail in the leg give good traction to dog as they ran. But the long nail may cause injury to bones and ligaments. . Thus, owners of hunting dogs need to take care of their paw pads by not running them too long on rocky areas.

When dogs' paw pads are injured, they need the care of a vet as soon as possible or things will inevitably get worse. There is a great potential for infection of injured paws. Dog owners should insist that their vets provide pain relief for dogs with injured paws.
