No dog owner likes to manage a dog that has a biting problem. Many breeds of dogs, big and small, Pitt Bulls and Rottweiler most prominent among them, have reportedly attacked children or other dogs, or chased a delivery boy who had to walk into the house. Though the reported cases may be extreme ones, getting bitten by a dog is not something unheard of. The onus is upon the dog owner to take sufficient preventive measures to forestall the problem before the dog actually bites someone.
This training program should be ideally undertaken when the dog is very young, by letting it mix with those other dogs which have impeccable behavior credentials. These dogs will help you in training your dog against developing a biting habit, because they correct it in their natural way. Even though biting comes naturally to dogs, if you would like to own a pooch that does not easily bite people, it has to be trained sufficiently early to understand that biting is taboo.
Since puppies remain with their biological family only for their first two months, the onus is upon the dog owner to play the mothers role in a dogs life. A pups main behavior training period is the four months from its birth, and that is why rescue dogs as well as dogs which are products of puppy mills are more likely to bite than those that are cared by breeders who are conscientious and reliable.
Puppy mills are often horrific places where dogs are kept in cramped overpopulated pens, by owners who could care less about their mental well being so long as the puppies fetch them a profit. Pups which come from such conditions are basically wild with major emotional, mental, behavioral, and sometimes health issues. These dogs have never been exposed to proper etiquette and simply dont know any better.
Even those, who own a rescue dog that easily bites others, can train the dog to give up its biting habit. It is definitely easier to train a young dog, but that does not mean that it is not possible to train an adult dog to be rid of its tendency to bite.
The method of training a big dog is not all that different from training a young one, the only requirement being that it should be done a little mildly. If a grown dog has biting tendencies, it cannot be left unleashed among other dogs, hoping that it would get trained the natural way, taking the cue from the other dogs; nor can it be allowed to roam free in a playground if it has a tendency to bite children. That will just be sticking your neck out to be caught in a lawsuit.
Do the training in increments, walk the dog on the outskirts of the park until it gets used to the idea of other dogs being nearby, and gradually bring it closer and closer. Patience and dedication are the key ingredients to solving a dog biting problem.
