Usually cat illness is indicated by the presence of two or more symptoms. These include vomiting and loss of appetite. If your cat keeps throwing up and you do not think the presence of a hairball is the cause, you should take them to the vet. If they are not eating all of a sudden, this is another indication that something might be wrong. If they are displaying both of those symptoms you should seek professional help for your kitty.
Other symptoms for your cat not feeling well include losing hair, having a discharge from mouth, ear or eye, having a high temperature or looking depressed. If any of these signs appear, take your pet to the vet.
There are a few illnesses that are fairly common in the general population. Some of these are not too serious however others are life threatening. If your cat has a tendency to get into fights, their risk of contracting certain diseases such as feline AIDS increases. The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is also known as cat AIDS, can affect kittens and older mammals.
Feline Leukemia is probably the most well known and most common of the sicknesses. Caused by a virus, it can cause certain types of cancer and blood disorders, and will frequently trigger abnormal cell growth.
It is transferred through grooming, urine, milk from the mother, bites and cuts. Kittens are more at risk than older mammals, especially when they are born to mothers who are already carrying the retrovirus. The possibility of contracting the disease increases when the pet is ill, or is frequently allowed to roam and get into fights.
Sneezing or secretions from the nasal passages, pale gums or a fever that just does not seem to go away are all signs of this disease. Another indicator is frequent infections in their bladder or their respiratory tract.
If you like to garden, make sure that none of the plants in your home or garden are poisonous to your pets. There are two types of kidney failure in cats and one of them is triggered by a cat eating something poisonous. Another type of kidney failure occurs as cats get older and is called chronic renal failure.
Cats can be very stoic when they are sick. If his normal behavior patterns are changing, i.e., if he seems to be thirsty all the time, passes urine often, has ulcers in his mouth, eats litter or seems to be weak, take him to the vet to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong.
The worst news we can get about our four-legged friend is that he has a chronic illness. However, if an illness is caught and treated early enough, many cats go on to live a long, happy life.
