Turtles fall under the class reptiles. Turtles have a total of 313 species and 200 subspecies. Though turtles can't hear, the have other forms of defense like their shell that helps in thermoregulation. The turtles mostly live in hot and sultry areas, and many of them are close to becoming extinct.
Can land turtle be more interesting companion than a water turtle? Many people decide on the basis of the cost. But it is not a good criterion to judge. They acknowledged their error later. A lot of those people now prefer the water turtles as better pets then the land turtles. Some turtles can give the dogs a tough competition. They have been known to respond to their owners and do everything what you want a pet to do.
It takes expert knowledge to discern the male from the female turtle. The shape of the shell of the male differs from that of the female in that it is convex, but that of the female is concave. The sex can also be identified by looking at their claws. The male has relatively longer claws than the female and the female has curved claws unlike the male which has curved claws.
A temperature of 30 to 32 degree Celsius should be maintained during the day time inside the aquarium. At night a temperature of around 5 to 10 degree Celsius is suitable during autumn and spring. You can also use sun beds for the water turtles.
The owners need to provide them the food they are used to consuming in their natural habitats. Shrimp, liver, insects etc will make them feel at home. If you want to include plants in their diet, then go with water hyacinth and watercress as they have high content of Phosphorous and Calcium. You can also drop crushed shells for extra nourishment.
Turtles have a body temperature much lower than ours. Hence, they can laze around in the sun and then cool down in water. They can survive on much lesser energy than human beings. So , unlike us , they don't need to eat every day. The turtles have proven to be adorable pets if they are well looked after.
