Caring for Your Pet Rabbits

Add comments

How can you take care of a rabbit? Compared to cats and dogs, rabbits have a harder time telling you what's on their mind. You won't be able to discern if they're in pain. Of course, as with any animal, you should take it to the vet every so often, and get it spayed or neutered to make it more docile.

If you want to keep them safe, get a rabbit cage with plenty of room (5x as big as them) and keep them indoors. Put cardboard on the bottom of a wire cage floor, and give them a box to hide in. This way, the rabbit can have privacy if it wants to, as well as a place to cool off when it gets hot.

When you want to feed the rabbit, give it fiber in the form of timothy grass hay, and feed it a quality pellet feed and green leaves that aren't lettuce. You can get more detailed diet information from your vet. Keep giving them fresh water.

Then, there's grooming and exercise concerns. Chewing is a personal favorite of the rabbit. Oral health can be improved, as well as decreasing the teeth overgrowing, simply by a rabbit's chewing habits. Cardboard, paper, and spent paper towel and bathroom tissue rolls as excellent choices for chewing safely.

Your rabbit will really benefit from the ability to move outside its cage once in awhile. If you choose to free your rabbit from its cage, try to keep your rabbit out of any dangers in your home. Watch the rabbit anytime you take it out of the cage, and keep it away from objects that can hurt it, like plants and electric wires, so it can't chew them.

You can pick up rabbits easily, but in case your rabbit hates being picked up, take the following precautions. Walk towards the rabbit in a non-threatening manner and pat the rabbit's head softly. Don't let the rabbit struggle, or they could get themselves hurt, just be extremely careful. Support the body from both ends, and try not to lift them by the scruff of their neck or their ears.
