The First Few Days

This is the time when guinea pigs are often scared of their new environment. They are most likely a few months old and have been used to their old pet store surroundings. Do not scare him any further by picking him up from his cage.

Give them several days to adjust to their new areas and life, because this is a very stressful time for them. Try to avoid making loud noises and hovering around them, because they need to take their own time to get used to what's around them.

Note:

You need to ensure that when you bring one or more guinea pigs into the house that they have a good area to hide - each guinea pig needs his or her own place, too, or a fight could break out!

Hover Not

Avoid acting like a mother and hovering over your baby guinea pig. It will only terrify him.

This makes your pet think that an eagle is swooping down to attack, and causes him to be very scared. Instead, when you want to observe your pet, kneel down to eye level with the cage. This will allow him to see you as more of a friend, and less of a foe.

Bribery

If you want to get closer to your guinea pig, you have to bring out the gifts. It may seem evil, but it does work.

The way to a guinea pigs heart is through the stomach, so shower him with the gift of food. You will not be limited in your choices of what to give because the guinea pig is an epicurean, and will appreciate almost anything.

How To Do It

If you have accepted that sometimes you have no choice but to bribe your guinea pig, here is how to do it.

Start by showing your pet the delicious treat you're offering them, then set it at the open door of the cage. Sit just outside, with your hands in your lap, and wait.

After a certain amount of time, if he hasn't taken the treat, carefully and slowly pick it up again, close the cage door, and leave. Try this several times a day until he gets the idea that he has to come and get it.

When he finally gets the idea, this is the time that you allow him to get acquainted with you, so inch your way nearer to the cage every time.

Soon, he will shyly but surely get the food from you. Next time, every time you approach, he will think that you have something for him. Thus, making him look forward to seeing you.

A Real Bond

Although bribing works most of the time, do not use this method when you want to pick him up and play with your pig.

Develop a real bond by being a real friend to him by caressing his fur, and playing with him.

Handle With Care

Guinea pigs should be handled with care. Their lungs can get crushed if you happen to handle them the wrong way.

Gently cup the torso of your guinea pig, and support the rear as you lift up. Don't hold them too hard, and instead carry them gently, ensuring that you're supporting their entire body well.

Avoid letting your young kids pick the guinea pigs up, especially when there is the risk that they can drop them. Guinea pigs are really delicate and are hurt easily.

Relaxing Your Pet

If you have been picturing yourself hanging out with your guinea pig the way you would with a puppy, you're going to get frustrated that you won't be able to do this right away.

Start out in a peaceful and quiet area. Have food on your lap and lay him down here.

If you're patient, he will, and eventually he's going to love being handled by you, and actually request it by squealing when he sees you coming near.
