A Proper Ferret Diet

A healthy ferret diet is critical to making sure your favorite furry friend lives a long and happy life. Even more so than other animals, without the right nutrition ferrets can suffer serious health problems. Some people don't realize that ferrets are carnivores and as such their metabolism demands a diet low in fiber and high in protein.

Cat food has been replaced by specially developed ferret foods as a preferred diet for our ferret friends. These foods are blended to have the proper mix of protein, high quality fat, and low carbohydrates which is exactly the diet your ferret needs to thrive and live a very long time.

When you buy ferret food you want to look for products with as close to the following ingredient levels as possible. 35-40% high quality protein, contains 21 amino acids, 18-30% fat, 2% fiber, and less than 7% ash level. You should also check to make sure that the carbohydrates are of high quality sourcing like rice flower or brewer's yeast.

Also beware that some ferret foods are made of low quality frozen fish and chances are your ferret will just stick up its nose and want nothing to do with it. It's not unheard of to have a ferret be so finicky and stubborn that they will go to the point of starving themselves to death before they will eat food they don't like.

Is it more pricey? Yep, sure is, but the good thing is that ferrets really don't eat that much and if you feed your ferret these high quality foods you won't need to give them supplements. So in the end, the costs kind of even themselves out.

Feed you ferret small portions twice a day using moist food supplemented with dry pellet food. The dry pellet food will help clean those little ferret teeth plus it keeps much longer. In fact, the moist food should be picked up and thrown away after it has been out 45 minutes. And don't forget to put out plenty of fresh water for your ferret to drink. He needs it to process his protein rich diet.

Ferret treats can be a great reward when trying to housebreak your ferret but are not necessary. Pieces of cooked meat or even cooked eggs make great snacks. Don't give your ferret fruits or candy, any dairy products, and not nuts or nut products. These food items can cause your ferret to suffer health problems such as diarrhea, hypoglycemia, and obesity; even tooth decay. And don't give your ferret any kind of grains or vegetables because they just aren't made to digest those foods well at all. Finally, NEVER ever, ever give any onions to your ferret. Onions are poisonous to ferrets and it just might kill you little buddy.

So for a healthy, happy ferret that will live a long and active life just follow these simple suggestions to make sure they eat right.
