The Russian Dwarf Hamster is actually a collection of different dwarf hamster species, that interestingly enough, do not originate from Russia. Among these species are the Winter White Russian Dwawrves, the Roborovski Russian Dwarves and the Djunagias or Campbell's Russian Dwarves.
First let us discuss size. The smallest among the three are the Raborovski Dwarf Hamsters. They measure four to five centimeters in length. The Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamsters and the Djungaria or Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters measure at least eight centimeters.
The most common of the Russians is the Winter White. Often in pairs, they have an amazing ability to change color. Yes, it's true! In their original habitats, these charcoal creatures transform into white to match the color of snow. This is a defense mechanism against those wanting to attack them.
Interestingly enough, even when tamed, these white creatures also morph into white during the colder months when there is less sun. This is true only for those pets that are kept where there is natural light.
The Djungaria Russian Dwarf Hamsters take their name from the Mongolian region of Djungaria. Also called Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters, these are the most prevalent among the different species. Equally prevalent is the number of the alternative ways they are being bred. Now, you will find them in various shades and colors.
The tiny Roborovski hamsters have longer legs than other hamsters. They are natives of the Chinese and Mongolian deserts. Their color is sand brown combined with slate gray.
These tiny pets are hard to contain. Their small size allows them to make quick escapes so look for cages that are sealed all throughout. One great feature of this specie though is that they are very hygienic. The love to clean and bathe themselves constantly.
Taking care of Russian Dwarf Hamsters is similar to those of regular hamsters. Feed them regularly and give them lots of clean water. They will thank you for it. Clean their cages and accessories too, and don't forget to replace their substrate weekly.
The Russian Dwarf Hamsters need their exercise and a good way to give it to them is to buy a hamster ball. A hamster ball is a hollow plastic sphere that wherein hamsters can run around in. It is a lot of fun for hamsters and because it is sealed, it prevents hamsters from getting lost. Hamster balls are hazardous though when used near staircases as they might roll down.
