Keep your pet on a proper diet, exercise them regularly and maintain a clean and tidy cage.

To avoid most health issues with guinea pigs we will use the strongest medicine. Prevention. Feed them well, let them run and keep them clean. I would like to point out that most Guinea Pigs don't take well to getting bathed (similar to cats). Avoid stressing them with water when possible. If your little fur ball really got into mess, then it must be done. Maintaining a clean and sanitary cage is the most effective way to extend the life of your pet and ensure good Guinea Pig health for years to come!

Cavy's (another name for Guinea Pigs) are much more likely to contract disease and illness when compared to other common household pets. Some believe the size of the cage is responsible for this. The discovery of bigger bald spots is cause for alarm. Lice, mites, fleas and other parasites including ringworm can be the source of the trouble. Consult your Vet and remedy the problem before it gets out of hand.

Diarrhea. Upon discovery of this problem, immediate action is required on your part. This can be fatal if not quickly treated. Diarrhea's main cause is an over abundance of fruits or vegetables(wet foods), and possibly the ingestion of something foreign or rotten to the regular diet. Add more dried foods and hay to the diet. Along with boosting the vitamin C in his pellets, an introduction of lactobacillus acidophiles for guinea pigs in capsule form should be administered.

Red pink or dark colored urine. Blood coming from the urinary tract is a grave condition. Consult your Vet immediately.

Skin irritations. Itching and scratching caused by parasites and fungal infections can lead to more serious conditions and should be dealt with quickly. Consult your Vet or pet store and get a medicated shampoo designed to kill and prevent further infestations. Many products exist to deal directly with specific vermin that attack your pet's coat.

Head tilting and seizures. Ear infections can cause your Cavy to slant his head to one side and walk irregular. Mites, lice and other parasites can cause a number of maladies that affect the nervous system. Tremors, head tilting, body curving, and stiffness can result. Look up your veterinary immediately when you think your pet shows these signs. The most significant aspects of bringing up a healthy Guinea Pig and the key to sustaining the life of your little fur ball is by keeping his/her Cage clean. Change the litter material regularly and sanitize the cage frequently.

Some final thoughts. Raising a happy healthy Cavy mostly depends on you! If you take care to clean his cage often, feed him a proper diet, exercise him regularly you can be sure to prevent the symptoms discussed in this article. Lead your pet to good,clean guinea pig health!
