There are numerous varieties of dwarf hamsters. There is the Chinese Dwarf Hamster, the White Winter Russian Dwarf Hamster and the Campbell's Dwarf Hamster, just to name a few. Dwarf-like in stature, hence their names, they also need as much nurturing as the larger hamster species, like the Syrian Hamster.
Dwarf hamsters are characterized by their small size and dainty frames. Like little children, they are extremely high-strung and can slip from your fingers in the blink of an eye. You will have trouble locating them if they do escape so make sure that they are well contained.
Hamsters like making their own dugouts in the soil, so pet supply manufacturers created plastic replicas of these. Dwarf hamsters though are more compatible in the smaller sized tubular habitats that are made for mice. They will not be able to negotiate the wide hallways of the ones made for regular-sized hamsters. Dwarf hamsters may also be placed in tanks (10-20 gallon capacity) or cages made of wire.
These sprightly creatures will find a running wheel useful. Statistics show that hamsters will run for five miles on this. To ensure your dwarf hamster's comfort and safety, purchase a wheel in accordance to the dwarf hamster's size.
Dwarf hamsters, like regular hamsters, like to burrow and make nests. So providing them with a substrate from wood shavings will be a treat for them. Remember to clean and empty the substrate once a week. Do not use materials like cedar and pine for the substrate as they make breathing difficult for hamsters. Make sure you use a dust-free and absorbent material.
Shredded paper, tissue and cotton make for good nesting materials too. Because of their need to be alone once in a while, hamsters have to create these little nests for themselves.
Some hamster eating habits you should know about are that they like to pile their food in their nests yet still want to be given fresh supplies of food and water continually. They have large appetites despite their tiny frames and eat a lot of dried fruits, vegetables, seeds and pellets. This is due to the fact that they burn a lot of energy because they are constantly moving around.
A soft chew toys is one of the best gifts you can give your pet hamster, as he is constantly teething, even throughout his adulthood. If you leave him to chew whatever he comes across, he might cause damage to himself and to your things as well, should he happen to be out of the cage. So give your hamster a wooden chew toy right away.
A housekeeping rule to remember is that their cages need to be thoroughly cleansed and rinsed every week. Good old soap and H20 are perfect for this. Anything harsher will just harm them. They must be wiped well after as they need to be free from any moisture before putting new substrate. Hamsters are not high-maintenance pets but they do need to be attended to. But these little tasks are the price you pay for having a wonderful pet.
