To achieve success with mastiff training it is important that you start off by identifying certain goals that are essential to getting your mastiff to behave in a desired manner. It obviously requires that you identify the things that the pet should be taught to do and also what he should be taught not to do. In addition, it helps if you put down these goals on a piece of paper that must then be hung on a wall so that you can check the progress of your training session against the goals that have been set.
The main purpose of mastiff training must be that the mastiff must learn how to behave appropriately and in addition it must also mean that the mastiff has learnt what he should never do. Both learning to do things and also not do things are important and must be dealt with in equal measure.
You should not try and train the mastiff to do things which are convenient for you, the dog's owner. It is far better to teach the pet to perform certain kinds of tasks or perform certain missions that the pet likes to do and which he finds are a big challenge that must be overcome.
Problem solving is a different kind of training goal and one that should be taught to your pet mastiff. This kind of training can involve certain activities that must tax the mastiff's brain such as learning to choose from a set of different solutions to a problem. It means that the pet should learn how to find an object that you have hidden from him and it also means moving certain objects so as to be able to find a different object.
It is certainly necessary that you train your pet mastiff in a manner that ensures that both the mastiff and his master get to have a good time. The mastiff loves being involved in doing things that are intriguing and useful while the pet owner derives much pleasure seeing their pets learning to obey commands.
It is however recommended that the training should not become too serious as that will defeat the purpose of having fun. It is much more desirable to train the mastiff in a way that he (the mastiff) connects the training with things that they love to do.
It also helps to approach the training with a reward and punishment bent of mind. It will pay to reward your mastiff when he obeys you and you should show your appreciation for his good behavior. Punishment is the exact opposite of reward and should be used sparingly whenever the pet refuses to obey you.
Whenever your pet obeys your commands you must reward him with not only a tidbit but also by showing that you appreciate his good behavior. Punishment is of course the opposite of rewarding your pet but it must be used carefully and never through harsh or forceful means. The most that you should do in order to punish your pet is to admonish him with a firm command telling him to stop misbehaving. Anything harsh will not do any good and so is to be avoided at all costs.
