Artemia are crustaceans that have been on this earth since the time of dinosaurs. They go by two other popular names, sea monkeys and brine shrimp.

Their use in the aquarium hobby is very widespread where they are used as food for both corals and fish. They are also very useful in the aquaculture industry where they are used mainly as larval food for both fishes and shrimp.

Adults are commonly frozen or dried while cyst capsules of different qualities are available as a live treat for fishes and corals.

They are commonly found in bodies of saline water such as salt lakes. They are not found in the ocean where predators will quickly consume them.

Artemia are able to withstand a wide variety of salinities in the wild. Up to 50% saltwater which s near saturation point. Their eggs are very sturdy and survive dry conditions for years. Harvesting their eggs is very easy mainly because they are buoyant. They are small crustaceans, reaching up to 15mm in the wild.

At home, simply put the eggs into a container with saltwater. Hatching occurs in a day. Feeding is not required in the first 12 hours as they have a yolk sac to provide nutrition.

Because they require very small foods, they are commonly fed spirulina powder, yeast and phytoplankton. If enough food is fed, artemia nauplii grow very quickly. They can double their size in just twenty four hours. Brine shrimp nauplii will require 15 molts to become an adult. They do not live long, expect a life span of about 50 days.
